VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 1: Edinburgh
From the Firth of Forth, a UNESCO site, to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh is steeped in history. Edinburgh Castle. The Royal Botanic Gardens. The UNESCO site of Old Town. The wonders of Edinburgh are never ending. From one of Europe’s best-preserved castles to the world’s longest herbaceous border, a riot of color and culture pervades. In this city as old as Scotland itself, you’ll find the perfect blend of historic tradition and natural beauty.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 2: Kirkwall
Everything about Orkney is olde, from the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae (the “Scottish Pompeii”) to the peat-distilled whisky at Highland Park to the UNESCO site of the Ring of Brodgar, dating back to 2700 B.C. Even the local brogue hints at times past, accented by the area’s Viking legacy.

Day 3: Kirkwall
Everything about Orkney is olde, from the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae (the “Scottish Pompeii”) to the peat-distilled whisky at Highland Park to the UNESCO site of the Ring of Brodgar, dating back to 2700 B.C. Even the local brogue hints at times past, accented by the area’s Viking legacy.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 5: Bergen
Colorful Bryggen, Bergen’s Hanseatic quay and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is so delightful you may find it difficult to explore further. But do. Watch the Huldras (forest nymphs) dance at Kjosfossen Waterfall, wander the narrow smau between the old buildings climbing the hillside.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 6: Geiranger
Visit tiny goat villages to sample homemade cheese. Take a RIB boat out on the spectacular Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Buy yourself a mango ice cream cone and absorb all the beauty around you.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 7: Alesund
At the entrance to spectacular Geirangerfjord, Alesund has been voted the most beautiful town in Norway, and not only because of its location. The town burned to the ground in 1904 and was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style, with a few added elements from Nordic mythology – a longboat here, an image of Thor there.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 8: Molde
Known as the City of Roses, Molde is encircled by 222 mountains, each one worthy of oohs and ahhs. Breathtaking excursions await, including the world-famous Trollstigen scenic mountain road with its sheer cliffs, waterfalls, and hairpin turns. Or take the low road—the Atlantic Road—twisting its way across the islands of the North Sea like an asphalt roller coaster.
VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 10: Runavik
The quaint fishing port of Runavík, founded in 1916, is the gateway to everything that the island of Eysturoy has to offer when it comes to wildlife and outdoor experiences. The spectacular landscape here includes everything from diving in the clear waters to tours of the island and its many sights including Slættaratindur, which, at 2,890 feet (882 meters) is the highest peak in the archipelago.

VIEW THE JOURNEY
Day 12: Reykjavik
The world's most northerly capital enjoys almost 24-hour sunlight in summer, all the better to show off the city’s eclectic architecture and dazzling natural wonders. “The Faroe Islands are even further isolated, leaving only nesting puffins and a few intrepid adventurers to admire Europe’s tallest sea cliffs.”
Our Storyteller: Travis La Marche
Operations Manager & Corporate Destination Manager Trainer
Travis is our Operations Manager & Corporate Destination Manager Trainer — a big title that basically means he supports our Destinations team at sea and our Product Managers in Seattle. It’s a role he’s well trained for with a decade of experience at sea and over 15 years of experience in the industry in a variety of areas from product development to public speaking. He’s a good listener, too.
Number of Windstar itineraries sailed: “Too many to count! I’ve visited every region that Windstar currently sails.”

Favorite thing to do onboard: “Head up to the Yacht Club first thing in the morning for a coffee and to watch the ship’s arrival into port. I also enjoy talking with guests out on deck in the morning and discussing their plans for the day.”

Hobby: “Riding my motorcycle and exploring different parts of the Canadian wilderness and the Pacific Northwest.”

Favorite part of his job: “My favorite part of my job is meeting and talking to guests, hearing why they love sailing with Windstar, and listening to their stories about past experiences and adventures.”

While Travis La Marche has crisscrossed nearly all of Northern Europe, the North Atlantic region’s dramatic topography always stops him in his trail boots. “These remote landscapes are actually quite distinct,” he says, “with everything from lush greenery to barren volcanic terrain.” There’s the take-your-breath-away beauty of Norway’s Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and the rugged, wild Shetland with her miniature ponies and heather moorlands. It’s here where you’ll find Jarlshof, an amazing archaeological site with 4,000 years of human history on display; while hundreds of prehistoric monuments — including the UNESCO-designated Skara Brae and Ring of Brodgar — lie sprinkled across the Orkneys’ pastoral grazing lands. The Faroe Islands are even further isolated, leaving only nesting puffins and a few intrepid adventurers to admire Europe’s tallest sea cliffs.

Amidst all this natural splendor sits lively Bergen, whose colorful, Hanseatic wharf earned UNESCO status; as well as the art nouveau town of Alesund, where Travis prefers to “just sit down in an inviting café and people watch.” Add a few extra days in Reykjavik, he says, and you’ll “fully experience some of the most beautiful, rugged areas in the world by land and by sea.”

  • Take advantage of an overnight in Bergen to “truly appreciate its Hanseatic history,” leisurely strolling along the old Bryggen pier and lingering over dinner in one of its beautifully preserved wooden merchant houses
  • Go hiking in the remote Faroe Islands or take a boat trip to Vestmanna Cliffs, home to thousands of nesting seabirds
  • Feel the misty spray of Geirangerfjord’s Seven Sisters Waterfall on a guided kayaking tour or RIB adventure — “Back at the dock, take the Fossevandring staircase up to the town’s waterfall and a lookout point with fantastic views over Geiranger”
  • Sample 12-year-old Scotch on a tour of the world’s most northerly whisky distillery in Kirkwall, or join the locals for a “wee dram” at one of the town’s many pubs like Helgi’s and Torvhaug
  • Float in the therapeutic waters of the renowned Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik — Travis recommends stopping on the way to the airport: “You’ll board your flight completely relaxed and ready to sleep”
